In this After Effects tutorial I will show you how to create your own highly customizable LED screen effect, ready to convert any text or image into pixelated goodness. The video covers the setup, expressions and usage of this versatile preset.
The preview video below shows but one possible way of using the Scrolling LED Text and the tutorial concentrates on the effect itself, rather than the setup of this particular scene.
Preview video uses a photograph by LonelyBob licensed under Creative Commons. It also features 5 notes from the Solitary Wasteland track on the Flower Soundtrack by Vincent Diamante and a sample from Pac-Man by Namco. This tutorial was made possible by the espresso coffee maker gifted to me as a wedding present.
Running time: 47min
Difficulty: Medium (quite a few expressions)

I missed your tutorials
Thanks Quba!
Thanks :)
It’s good to be back, though I have to admit – having worked on this tutorial from 1 to 7 AM (recording+editing+compressing+uploading) left me today feeling as if I partied the whole night. HANGOVER!
Welcome back mate, what could be better than having a hangover while making LED-Text. :-)
Always wanted to make something of this kind….. THANKS A TON for this tutorial…. I havent seen this tutorial as of now… just want to know if any third party plug ins or presets required for this tutorial??
Nisarg,
you can always see if there are any 3rd party plugins required in the “Required Tools” section of the tutorial’s text description. That’s for the future reference.
For now I can just tell you that the whole effect runs on vanilla AE and does not need anything extra. You need to make sure you have all the CC plugins installed, though. If I recall correctly some older versions of AE had those as a separate installer included in the extras folder on the original disc.
Hiya
thanks for the tut. myself and i’m sure, many others appreciate them very much.
Great tutorial, Quba. You’re so talented.

hey can someone help me? i have a problem
in the _source comp am using a video, everithing looks ok in _magic comp, but in the _result comp is black and white
what can i do?
are you trying to introduce a tint to the vignette or do you want full color effect?
i have designed this effect for monochrome (1 color) displays but with some tweaking one could adapt it to be a tri-color or even full color effect

I am a student. I don`t know scripting languages. I tried to make the thing exactly like this tutorial but my after effect does not support the terms like width, height this comp, etc. so I am unable to make this effect. I tried your project but it does not works properly. Please suggest me what I should do & why my after effect does not support script.
Great tutorial! Thank you very much
Thanks for this! Its exactly what I needed! Just about to watch it again to get the ideas down:)
Pummy I know the scripting pummy
Really useful tutorial. I do have a quick question though. I’m trying to build a led scrolling display in the shape of a box. Wanting the text to scroll down one side, across and then back up the other side in a u shape. If that makes sense any help would be appreciated.
Thank you for all of the effort on this blog

Hi, great tutorial. Although when typing the code and linking the Expression: Scale from the Pixel Comp to the Slider from Led Effect Comp I get this error:
after effects warning class ‘effect’ has no property or method named ‘x’
Expression Disabled
Error Occured at line 1
Comp: ‘Magic’
Layer: 1 (Pixel)
Property: ‘Scale’
Hi Quba. Loving your site and tutorials as always.
Just letting you know, I loved your tutorial so much, that I’ve created an AE script that automates the process of creating your LED Effect, as well as adding a few other controls.
The resulting video after running the script and links were located here –> https://vimeo.com/56978301 .
If you had the time, I’d really like to hear any feedback you might have :) .

Another great technique to cure panic attacks is to write down things you are grateful for in the present.
This rush of adrenaline can keep you feeling on edge and panicky and some of
the symptoms are so overwhelming you may feel as if you are going to die.
If you are not getting enough water you can feel like you are experiencing a panic attack.
