Cinemagraph: Remember ZX

Not too long ago, these were referred to as simply “cool animated gifs”. These days they go by much more artsy name of Cinemagraphs.

In the picture: ZX Spectrum microcomputer, an Italian analogue sound mixer and a National TV set. Only TV still works. Image brought to life in After Effects.

PS. Yea, I just realized these are called Cinemagraphs, not Cinegraphs. Corrected the spelling throughout the post.

New Rig

Until earlier this week, the system I worked on (and recorded all the tutorials) was pretty miserable. Running on an old 2.4GHz QuadCore processor (Q6600) with 4GB of RAM and dual nVidia 8800GTS SLI cards have been fun two years ago, but as the demands of operating systems and software increased I found myself spending too much time on waiting, and too less on creating. Most of the work done in PAL standard was still OK, but all the projects mastered in HD were bringing my old compy to its knees.

This is the first post written from my new system, custom built by a friend of mine (who would have thought World of Warcraft was such a networking opportunity :). It’s a monster (the PC, not the friend).

I am still finishing up several projects, and the computer is not fully installed, but I can already see my productivity increase incredibly. To give you an example, the monstrosity mentioned in the previous post took over 17 hours to render on my old machine. The new system did it in 1 hour, 20 minutes. Full specs after the break.

Bici Bee #144: Multasking

Thanks to Simeon for reminding me about Bici!

Meeting Calendar

This post begins a three-month Doodles&Noodles marathon. Until the middle of May, every other day a new sketch, doodle or illustration will be posted on QubaHQ. This is a result of a day of work spent digging through my old notebooks, scanning them and cleaning images up in Photoshop. Here is the first one:

This one dates back to 2003. back then I was a lecturer at the university and we held long, pointless department meetings twice a week. Meetings would usually go on for hours and be conducted in Turkish – language I barely understood back then. As a full-time staffer, I had to be present though.

Nuit Blanche

Nuit Blanche is a short film directed by Arev Manoukian. It caught my eye today over at Motionographer, and although I realize most motion graphics enthusiasts already visit that site on a daily basis, I decided to re:post it here as well.

Bici Bee #115: Time Machine
